I think it’s fair to say that Hollywood hasn’t had the best track record when it comes to making Robin Hood movies. The most recent attempt – Ridley Scott’s surprisingly dull revisionist tale starring Russell Crowe – while technically a competent movie, lacked the necessary amount of charm and a sense of adventure to really sell the swashbuckling story. While a typically gritty re-imagining is currently in the works at Lionsgate, Deadline today reported that Sony has secured the rights to another script that seeks to shake up the formula.
Set to star Margot Robbie, Marian will shift the emphasis from Robin Hood and his Merry Men to the eponymous Maid Marian as she takes up the mantel of the famous outlaw. Apparently, it will be a cross between Braveheart and Game of Thrones… which… I think is a good thing?
“After a conspiracy to conquer England in which the love of her life dies before her eyes, Marian picks up the cause to lead her people into a pivotal war. She comes to power, charging into a battle that will not only decide the fate of the kingdom, but will see her don the mantle of the man she loved.”
Joking aside, the premise sounds fairly interesting – although, for me, it immediately conjured images of the ending battle from Snow White and the Huntsman – and I do think Margot Robbie is a talented actress (Suicide Squad notwithstanding), so hopefully we’ll finally get the ‘serious and gritty’ Robin Hood movie that no one asked for…
