Well… that escalated quickly!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is considering relaunching the TRON franchise with Jared Leto as its lead. While it is still early days, the news is that the new movie will involve elements of the abandoned TRON: Ascension script, with Leto playing a character named Ares.
Speaking at a recent Q&A following a Collider screening of his contribution to the series – 2010’s TRON: Legacy starring Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde – director Joseph Kosinski speculated on the potential future of the franchise. While he made no mention of Disney’s plans (implying that he has been left out of the loop to some extent), Kosinski did talk at length about the script for TRON: Ascension – calling it ‘an invasion movie’:
“What I’m excited about is the concept, which is an invasion movie from inside the machine coming out as opposed to one we’ve usually seen […] the idea for Ascension was a movie that was, the first act was in the real world, the second act was in the world of TRON […] and the third act was totally in the real world. And I think that really opens up, blows open the concept of TRON in a way that would be thrilling to see on screen.”
Interestingly, Kosinski commented that the chances of a follow up movie were slim but he would ‘never say never’. It remains to be seen whether the director will be asked to return for the new installment.
